Relationships and Partnerships
Cameco seeks and promotes collaborative, respectful relationships with organizations and groups that have an interest in or are impacted by our operations, including community liaison groups, industry associations and registered charities.
Community Liaison Groups
Athabasca Working Group (AWG)
The AWG is a uranium industry/community liaison group made up of Cameco, AREVA and representatives of seven Athabasca communities in northern Saskatchewan. The group is responsible for overseeing activities related to an impact management agreement that was signed in 1999. The AWG meets quarterly to discuss business and workforce development initiatives and Cameco and AREVA’s ongoing operations in the area. It also directs the Athabasca environmental monitoring program.
Environmental Quality Committee (EQC)
The northern Saskatchewan EQC was formed in 1995 to act as a bridge between communities, government and uranium mining companies, with a shared goal of ensuring uranium development in northern Saskatchewan considers the needs, concerns and aspirations of those most directly affected by it. The group includes three EQC subcommittees that represent 30 communities across northern Saskatchewan. Community representatives are nominated by their communities.
Port Hope Community Liaison Forum
Cameco created community liaison forums in 2006 to share information and provide an opportunity where people can raise concerns and engage in dialogue about our operations and related issues. Cameco also produces a newsletter summarizing the information provided at each forum, as well as other information. Copies of the newsletter are mailed to every address in the Municipality of Port Hope.
Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation (WDLAC)
WDLAC is a corporation holding the native title rights and interests of the Martu people of the Central Western Desert region in Western Australia. Scientists in Schools
In 2008, Cameco provided founding sponsorship to Scientist in Schools to launch their program in Northumberland County and across the Kawartha Lakes Region. In total, Cameco has committed nearly $650,000 to the program. Scientists in School is a non-profit organization dedicated to spark children’s love of science through hands-on classroom activities where children from Kindergarten through Grade 8 are exposed to the wonders of chemistry, engineering, biology and other scientific endeavors under the guidance of real science role models from their communities. The workshops reach approximately 1,000 classrooms and more than 27,000 students each year. Their impact is extended further through participation in school science nights, community group meetings and other outreach programs in the community, including Cameco’s Port Hope Fall Fair exhibit.
