Cameco facilitates recycling nuclear weapons

Cameco's participation in the 'megatons to megawatts' agreement between the US and Russia has helped in the dismantling and recycling of over 403 tonnes of nuclear warheads. Under the agreement, weapons-grade highly enriched uranium hexafluoride is blended down with natural uranium hexafluoride to create fuel for generating electricity – making our world not only safer, but cleaner and brighter too.

Under the agreement, the low enriched uranium (LEU) is transported from Russia and sold to the US and other countries, where it is then packaged in fuel bundles for nuclear reactors. Canada and Cameco do not handle any enriched material.

For a company whose top priorities include safety and protecting the environment, Cameco is proud to be part of this project, and will continue to support it through to completion in 2013.
