Radiation Protection Officer
Safety of people and the environment is one of Cameco’s corporate values. Our radiation protection officers play an integral role in ensuring the people who spend time at our facilities maintain safe levels of radiation exposure at all times. Monitoring is heavily regulated by both Canadian and US regulatory bodies, and Cameco is committed to the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) program and code of practice.
We have nine radiation protection officers in Northern Saskatchewan with at least two at each location. In Ontario, we have two at our conversion facility and two at Cameco Fuel Manufacturing in Port Hope, and one at our Blind River Refinery. In the US, we have one at Smith Ranch Highland operation in Wyoming.
Radiation protection officers supervise the daily activities of radiation technicians and oversee regulatory reporting and quality control, ensuring all data is complete and accurate, generating reports and reviewing content, developing quality control procedures and training staff. They also advise foremen and senior managers on radiation safety, investigate and report on conditions that exceed administrative levels, and provide guidance for corrective actions as required.
To become a radiation protection officer at Cameco, you must have a technical/science-related diploma and five to eight years of relevant work experience in underground mining, ventilation and/or occupational health and safety. A person with supervisory experience will do well in this role, but those without this experience or wanting to build on these skills could qualify for leadership development programs offered at our corporate headquarters in Saskatoon.
Cameco supports employees’ growth within the company and there is potential for employees in this role to progress in their career, depending on their level of education, training and experience.
Radiation protection officers at our operational sites in Northern Saskatchewan work a rotational week on/week off schedule and commute to site by plane. Those at all other locations work a regular weekly schedule.
